What to Plant This Winter in Mauritius

Winter Planting Guide for Mauritius (June - September)

Mauritius enjoys mild winters with temperatures between 17-24°C, making it a great season for certain crops that struggle in the summer heat.

Best Vegetables for Winter

  • Carotte (Carrots) — Sow directly in well-drained soil. Ready in 10-12 weeks. Carrots love the cooler weather and develop sweeter flavour.
  • Chou (Cabbage) — Start seedlings in trays, transplant after 3-4 weeks. Space 40cm apart. Harvest in 8-10 weeks.
  • Haricot (Green Beans) — Direct sow after last heavy rains. Bush varieties do well in small gardens. Ready in 6-8 weeks.
  • Bringelle (Eggplant) — While typically a warm-season crop, early winter plantings in sheltered spots can still produce well.
  • Lalo (Okra) — Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot. Okra tolerates cooler nights if days are warm enough.

Best Fruits for Winter

  • Citron (Lemon) — Existing trees fruit heavily in winter. Feed with compost in May.
  • Goyave (Guava) — Peak season. Minimal care needed, just keep watered.
  • Avocat (Avocado) — Hass varieties fruit from June onwards.

Tips for Winter Success

  1. Mulch heavily — Retain soil moisture and warmth with sugarcane bagasse or dried leaves.
  2. Water less frequently — Cooler temps mean less evaporation. Overwatering causes root rot.
  3. Watch for fungal diseases — Cooler, humid mornings can encourage mildew. Space plants well for airflow.
  4. Use raised beds — Better drainage during occasional winter showers.

Soil Preparation

Before planting, work in well-rotted compost or cow manure. Mauritius soils tend to be slightly acidic — add a handful of wood ash per square metre to balance pH for brassicas like cabbage.
